Grade 4 Tier Activities

Grade 4 Tier 1 Activity: Division Vocabulary Match

Objective: Students will be able to define and match the terms dividend, quotient, divisor, and remainder in sentences requiring division.

Materials: Whiteboard or chalkboard, Markers or chalk, Index cards or paper cut into small squares, Pencils or pens

Procedures:

  1. Begin by reviewing the terms dividend, quotient, divisor, and remainder with the students. Explain that these are important vocabulary words that we use when working with division problems.
  2. Write the terms on the board and provide a brief definition or explanation for each term.
  3. Give each student several index cards or small squares of paper (depending on class size) and have them write one of the terms on each card.
  4. Once students have written their terms, collect the cards and mix them up.
  5. Divide the class into pairs or small groups and distribute the shuffled cards.
  6. Explain to students that their task is to match each term with its corresponding definition or explanation.
  7. Give students time to work together to match the terms and provide support as needed.
  8. Once students have completed their matches, review the answers as a class and discuss any questions or concerns that students may have.
  9. As an extension activity, have students create their own division problems that include the terms dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder.

Grade 4 Tier 2 Activity: Division Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt

Objective: Students will be able to define and use the terms dividend, quotient, divisor, and remainder in sentences requiring division.

Materials: Whiteboard or chalkboard, Markers or chalk, Scavenger hunt worksheets (see below), Pencils or pens

Procedure:

  1. Begin by reviewing the terms dividend, quotient, divisor, and remainder with the students. Explain that these are important vocabulary words that we use when working with division problems.
  2. Write the terms on the board and provide a brief definition or explanation for each term.
  3. Distribute the scavenger hunt worksheets to each student.
  4. Explain that the scavenger hunt is a game in which students will work in pairs or small groups to search for examples of division problems that include the terms dividend, quotient, divisor, and remainder.
  5. Instruct students to work together to find at least three examples of division problems that include each of the four vocabulary terms on their worksheet. They should write each example on their worksheet, along with an explanation of which term is the dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder.
  6. Give students a time limit to complete the scavenger hunt (e.g. 20-30 minutes) and remind them to work cooperatively with their partners or group members.
  7. Once the time limit is up, bring the class back together and have groups share their examples with the class. Write the examples on the board and discuss which term is the dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder in each problem.
  8. As a follow-up activity, have students work independently to create their own division problems that include the terms dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder. They can then exchange their problems with a partner or group member to solve.

Grade 4 Tier 3 Activity: Division Vocabulary Word Problems

Objective: Students will be able to define and use the terms dividend, quotient, divisor, and remainder in word problems requiring division.

Materials: Whiteboard or chalkboard, Markers or chalk, Word problem worksheets (see below), Pencils or pens

Procedure:

  1. Begin by reviewing the terms dividend, quotient, divisor, and remainder with the students. Explain that these are important vocabulary words that we use when working with division problems.
  2. Write the terms on the board and provide a brief definition or explanation for each term.
  3. Distribute the word problem worksheets to each student.
  4. Instruct students to read each word problem carefully and identify which term is the dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder. They should underline or circle each term in the problem and write their corresponding definitions in the space provided.
  5. Students should then solve the division problem using the four basic operations.
  6. Once students have completed their worksheets, bring the class together to review the problems and solutions. Write each problem on the board and ask students to share their solutions and how they used the vocabulary terms to solve the problem.
  7. As an extension activity, have students create their own word problems that include the terms dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder. They can then exchange their problems with a partner or group member to solve.

I hope this activity helps reinforce the vocabulary terms and engages the students in an interactive and collaborative way. Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything else I can assist you with.
