Grade. 5 – Science Lesson Plan: Term 2 Unit 2

Here’s a lesson plan for grade five students focusing on making predictions about the growth of plants in organic and non-organic media, incorporating the KUD strategy and the 5Es instructional model:

Lesson Plan # 3: Predicting Plant Growth in Organic and Non-Organic Media

Grade Level: 5th Grade
Subject: Science
Objective: Students will make predictions about the growth of plants in organic and non-organic media, understand farming practices such as mulching, composting, and crop rotation, and present their findings to the class.

KUD Strategy:

Know: Students will know the differences between organic and non-organic media and understand farming practices such as mulching, composting, and crop rotation.

Understand: Students will understand how farming practices affect plant growth and predict the outcomes of using organic and non-organic media based on their understanding.

Do: Students will be able to make predictions about the growth of plants in organic and non-organic media, conduct interviews with farmers to gather information on farming practices, and present their findings to the class.

Teaching/Learning Procedure:

Engage:

  1. Begin the lesson by discussing with students the concept of organic and non-organic farming and their impact on plant growth.
  2. Show images or videos of organic foods in markets or supermarkets and discuss their labels and ingredients with the students.
  3. Introduce the farming practices of mulching, composting, and crop rotation and their importance in organic farming.

Explore:

  1. Organize a visit to local markets or supermarkets where students can identify foods labeled as organic. Instruct them to list the ingredients or details of how these foods are made.
  2. Divide students into groups and assign each group to conduct interviews with farmers who use practices such as mulching, composting, and crop rotation.
  3. Instruct students to take pictures of these practices during the interviews to be used in scrapbooks or projects.

Explain:

  1. Facilitate a class discussion where students share their findings from the market visit and farmer interviews.
  2. Guide students to describe and explain the farming practices depicted in the pictures, emphasizing their role in organic farming and plant growth.
  3. Discuss with students how these practices contribute to soil health, nutrient availability, and plant growth in organic media.

Elaborate:

  1. Instruct each group to create a scrapbook or project showcasing their findings, including pictures of farming practices, interview transcripts, and explanations of organic farming principles.
  2. Encourage students to be creative in their presentation and use additional resources such as charts, graphs, or diagrams to support their findings.
  3. Provide time for groups to prepare and finalize their projects for presentation to the class.

Evaluate:

Assess students’ scrapbooks or projects based on the following criteria:

  • Correct information given regarding organic farming practices and their impact on plant growth.
  • Accuracy of observations made during the market visit and farmer interviews.
  • Properly constructed questions used during the interviews to gather information.
  • Creativity and effectiveness of the presentation in conveying key concepts and findings.

    Assessment:

    Assessment 1:

Criteria: Correct information given and accurate observations made.

Tier 1: Assess basic comprehension and understanding of organic farming practices and their impact on plant growth.

Tier 2: Evaluate the depth of understanding and accuracy of observations made during the market visit and farmer interviews.

Tier 3: Assess critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and interpret information gathered from interviews and observations.

    Assessment 2:

Criteria: Properly constructed questions and creative presentation done.

Tier 1: Assess basic ability to formulate questions and conduct interviews with farmers.

Tier 2: Evaluate the effectiveness of questions in eliciting relevant information and insights from farmers.

Tier 3: Assess creativity, originality, and clarity of presentation in conveying findings to the class.

By following this lesson plan, students will not only make predictions about plant growth in organic and non-organic media but also gain a deeper understanding of organic farming practices and their impact on plant health and growth.
